“Human behavior is economic behavior. The particulars may vary but competition for limited resources remains a constant.”
—CEO Nwabudike Morgan, The Centauri Monopoly (c. 2100)
Our modern Treaty of Westphalia¹ is the polite reservation to atheism and religion of authority over their respective areas of inquiry. Atheism has jurisdiction over science; religion, including, latterly, ideology, has responsibility for meaning, or ethics. This is an ecumenical position. progressive theists use the concept to justify their theism in an atheistic age. Reactionary theists do similar, but as a put-down to science and atheism, both of which they reject. But atheists also accept the premiss. Either they abandon ethics in favour of sterile, superficially “value-neutral” technocracy”; or they adopt crypto-theist idealism with no relation to material reality.
But while it may be useful for folks to believe in this distinction between reality and ethics, it is not true. It betrays a misconception of what ethics is. They believe ethics to be real, in a sort of Platonic sense; something that is independent of humanity. The theists believe ethics to be an emanation of the god-head, an objective truth that exists independent of humanity or the material world. The post-theists believe ethics to be a transcendental matter of “human rights”, which despite the name are an abstraction independent of real, material humanity. Some Marxists did attempt to construct a materialist ethics based on the pseudo-science of historical materialism, but it was crippled by its under-lying falsity. Besides, most Marxists, especially today, believe instead in immaterial idealist ethics. For from where comes the moral priority of the proletariat? At most, it arises from a contingent, mercenary identification of interests with the proletariat—and often not even that, as many Marxists are thoroughly bourgeois. Those who are not adopting populism cynically, as a vehicle for their personal ambitions, are driven by starry-eyed idealism, an emotional fetish for the working-classes.
But this is not what ethics is. Ethics is the set of principles that allow a society to survive and thrive. This is a necessity of evolution: a society that adopts principles that do not help it survive will not continue to exist to have such principles. Nothing else matters in the long-run—or in the short-run, if the principles are bad enough! Neutral rules can persist through path-dependency; perhaps even a few negative ones if there are enough positive ones. These are messy, real, emergent systems we are dealing with. Evolution is not a magical, transcendental deity for us to worship. It is not infallible. But overall, its results produce ethical systems that promote survival and thriving, by definition.
There is an important extent to which we ought not second-guess these results. After all, they have persisted where others have not. We should not fall into the trap of thinking that we know everything, all the factors that led to a given principle's adoption and persistence. But nor is evolution an omniscient deity against whom we must not blaspheme. The point of Chesterton's fence is not that all fences must remain in place forever. In particular, there are some factors that affect the likelihood that a principle needs replacing:
- It is a new principle, or a new interpretation or extrapolation of an older principle. In this case the concerns scarcely apply at all, as it has no persistence to reckon with in the first place.
- It is in a new situation that voids the original rationale for it. Of course, one must be sure that the situation really has changed.
- It is still valid in its way, but new, other principles have superseded it. Here one must be sure it really is superseded, and that it does not still have use as a back-up plan in case the new principle fails.
- Its use has decayed over time into a harmful version of itself, and it cannot be repaired. One must be sure it really has decayed rather than evolved, and that it really is not reparable. One must also have a plan to restore the original functionality.
- It was always bad, and persists only through inertia, path-dependency, and sheer bad luck. This is the rarest case in reality, and the most common case for thoughtless reformers to make wrongly. It is nearly all false positives, and almost no false negatives. So one would need extraordinary justification to successfully make this case.
These cases compose a set of exclusion criteria for ethical principles. There must also be inclusion criteria. I have confidently dismissed all hitherto existing ethical systems as false.² It is time for me to lay my own cards on the table. What cases could comprise a set of inclusion criteria for a materialist ethics?
