Some Thoughts About My 1944 Map Of The Lake District

I acquired this map as a gift. Such maps sell for a few pounds. The map was produced by the Scottish map-making firm Bartholomew's (John Bartholomew & Son, now Collins Bartholomew). It is a fold-up map of dissected paper on cloth. The paper frontispiece measures 10.4cm wide by 21.1cm high (portrait), on folded cloth measuring 10.9cm wide by 21.8cm high. Inside there are thirty-two paper sections in total, arranged in four rows of eight sheets each. Each sheet is 10.4–10.7cm wide. The top two rows of eight sheets are each roughly 21.5cm high; the third-row sheets are roughly 20.3cm high; and the bottom-row sheets are much shorter at 13.1cm high. The map depicts a popular part of the English Lake District in topographical detail, stretching from the summit of Skiddaw in the north to the southern tip of Windermere in the south, and from Ponsonby in the west to Clifton in the east.
